Excellent book, a must have. Purchased used from International Book Sellers and received a great deal and the seller was very customer service friendly (Thanks again April!).

This is quite a thick book but it needs to be as it has lots of information on the development of a child. Very easy to read and answers lots of questions that cross my mind on a daily basis. Like when should he be smiling etc.

This was my first Amazon.com purchase and it was a great one! It was easy to find the book I was looking for, simple to read the detailed description of the condition of the book and just as simple to purchase. My book arrived at my home very quickly and it was just as described! Thank you!

This is a great reference for new parents! My first baby is four weeks old and I've referred to this book almost daily. It covers everything from breastfeeding, to development to first aid. Awesome book!

Perhaps I'm biased because I picked this one up about a month after my baby was born, but I thought this book was a waste of money. There was very little practical information in here (despite it's generous size, which had me giddy when I first saw it). I thought a book that large had to have "some" information that would be helpful to a tired, new mom. I was wrong. The Sears' attachment parenting style permeates the book. They are big proponents of breast feeding and the benefits are noted in every chapter. Before I had my son, I read every conceivable book on breast feeding, convinced I was going to be great at it. Unfortunately, I wasn't and my son ended up in the hospital for dehydration. SInce my son wasn't sucking, my milk never fully came in. I agree with the authors that breast feeding is best, however, some of us just couldn't hack it and I felt like I was being lectured to for the entire book. So, with that in mind, every few paragraphs, I felt like I was getting a dig from the authors, "Well, you wouldn't be having these kinds of problems if you'd breast fed your kid." There is a chapter entitled "Bottle-feeding with Safety and Love," but it's very short and still filled with comments about how your child is going to be stupid, malnourished, and distrustful because you didn't breast feed.
Another big problem I have with the book is the decided stance against mothers going back to work. I would give anything to be a stay-at-home-mother, however, financially, it's just not going to work for us. Dr. Sears comically suggests that you should reevaluate your finances and your priorities to stay home with your kids. Yeah, well, we did that, and I could stay home with my son, but then we couldn't eat. Then, of course, throughout the book there are digs about how you should be staying home with your kids. Well, it's nice that (his wife) Martha has a rich doctor for a husband, but for the rest of us, just trying to get by, this doesn't really work. In addition, I find it offensive the way the doctor purports that you don't care about your kids unless you are willing to give up working.
I gave it two stars because if I "had" breast fed and I "could" stay at home with my kids, this would be a nice, feel-good book, championing my "great choices." Unfortunately, for those of us that can't do those two things, it's a real downer.
