 "Great Diapers!" 2009-11-24
By Rachael E. Sheridan
I recieved one of the "one size" bumGenius diapers with two microfiber inserts as a baby shower gift. My husband and I liked that one so much that we bought two more in different colors. These diapers are SOFT and don't chaffe my son's little tuschie. Also, the snaps down the front and extra velcro on the sides make the trasition from tiny-tuschie to bigger tuschie easy. I didn't have to go out and buy more diapers every time he grew in size. Also, they wash reaaaalyy well. If he got poo on them, I just sprayed with OXY before washing (I didn't even rinse them) and they look like new, no stains. They also do a great job with keeping my son's "blowouts" down to almost none. The only drawback to these diapers is that if I don't change the inserts frequently enough, he'll pee right through them. The shell will stay dry on the outside, but the inner lining will get wet, which means I have to put on a new insert and a new shell. They are also a little bulky for travelling. When we use the plane, we just pack regular diapers to save space. But, for hanging around the house, or running errands around town, these diapers are BY FAR the best. I highly recommend investing in several. The more you have, the easier it is. They pay for themselves after a month.

"Good Enough, Prefer Fuzzi Bunz" 2009-11-19
By Elizabeth (United States)
We originally bought 12 Bum Genius 3.0 one size diapers for our son and 12 fuzzi bunz one size diapers. I recognize that for many parents, it is just about what fits your children better. But for us, fuzzi bunz was much better - we ended up reselling most of the BumGenius and replacing them with fuzzi bunz.

Cons:

-The velcro doesn't work well for us. We could never get it tight enough so that it wouldn't leak (especially at night when they would ALWAYS leak at the top) but loose enough so that it wasn't too tight around his tummy. It was also always hard for us to get the legs the right tightness. At eight months (we still have two left - so we use them when the fuzzi bunz are being washed) the legs are already too tight no matter how we adjust the velcro. Part of this is that he has very chunky legs and a big round tummy. So maybe they fit better with skinny babies. They tended to fit our son better when they were the smallest size and he was a baby and when he was less chubby, so maybe, again, better for skinnier babies.

-Another downside the the velcro is that you have to always make sure the tabs are down when you wash, and things are always getting caught in it anyway.

-It would be nice if there were better designs. The colors are nice and bright, and the blues are especially good, but a few designs wouldn't hurt. Also, the white ones fade and discolor, so I wouldn't get them. They don't stay crisp white at all.

Pros:

-I do like the flap at the top (as compared to the Fuzzi Bunz which is open).

-I like how the material on the inside is micro-fleece rather than the fuzzy stuff that fuzzi bunz uses. The FB softness is nice at first, but it wears thin soon whereas the micro-fleece stuff doesn't seem to wear down as fast.

In short, if these fit your baby well and don't leak, I'm sure they are great diapers. Buy a few to try first. I know lots of families like them. We just never could get them to work well - both because of the fit/size and because of the velcro.

 "Cloth Diapering Tips" 2009-11-15
By B (Bismarck, ND)
I did a lot of research when I was pregnant in cloth diapering and ended up purchasing these diapers and have been very pleased with them. With our 7-month old still wearing these bumGenius diapers, they are holding up well, they are easy to use - even the grandparents love them! We call them "washable diapers" since people envision the old style cloth with pins when you say "cloth diapers". With velcro and sizing snaps, these aren't your grandma's cloth diaper. I'm glad we bought them, but here's a few things to consider before taking the plunge into "alternative diapering":

Pros

- Economical. Yes, there is an initial investment, but we've recouped that and then some in using cloth over disposible.

- These bumGenius diapers are all you need. Expect 8-12 dirty diapers a day, so buy 24 of them in a few different colors (we bought gender neutral colors so we could use them with future children). You don't need diaper covers, extra inserts, or anything like that.

- Fewer blowouts. On the occasions that we've used disposibles (vacations), we've had more messes than with these cloth ones.

- No diaper rash. The only time we've had diaper rash issues is when we've been switching between disposibles and washables (vacation).

- Point of discussion. If you are a "greenie", then you'll like the fact that people will see your diapers and ask you about them.

- Frankly, they are just adorable.

Cons

- Extra laundry. Expect to do a load of diapers every other day - and know that the manufacturer recommends two cycles (1st cold, 2nd hot) with an extra rinse for each wash. We typically skip the extra rinse. If you are buying cloth diapers to be ecologically friendly, know that the super-absorbant inserts that are included with the diapers take a long time to dry in the dryer...and even longer if you plan on air-drying them.

- Special laundry detergent. We bought a big jug of Allen's Naturally - I'm sure other reviews will offer other suggestions.

- Smell. The diapers don't smell, but they can get smelly. If your diapers smell, you'll need to strip them (check other recs for tips on this). We keep the dirty diapers in a covered recycling bin to help contain odors between washings.

- Extra diaper changes. It seems like our child is more aware of being wet with cloth diapers than with disposibles - although some say this may help with potty training in the future.

- You'll need an understanding daycare provider that doesn't mind keeping the dirty diapers in a plastic bag for the day

- When they get older, the diapers get messier. Get ready to scrape and rinse...

- Extra bulk. Your child will probably need to wear the next size up in clothing to accomodate the diaper.

Hope this helps anyone that's on the fence about it. Good luck and remember that the diaper you choose doesn't make you a better or worse parent - we all make choices for our own reasons. Happy diapering! :)

 "The best diapers" 2009-11-06
By J. Freitas
We have been using these diapers for over two months and so far it's been the best investment. My baby is breastfeed and these diapers hold up the mess. They are even better than the disposable ones, not only for the saving and the enviromental issue but because they do not leak or irritate her like those. I higly reccomend you try with these.
