A breakthrough approach for a good night's sleep--with no tears

There are two schools of thought for encouraging babies to sleep through the night: the hotly debated Ferber technique of letting the baby "cry it out," or the grin-and-bear-it solution of getting up from dusk to dawn as often as necessary. If you don't believe in letting your baby cry it out, but desperately want to sleep, there is now a third option, presented in Elizabeth Pantley's sanity-saving book The No-Cry Sleep Solution.

Pantley's successful solution has been tested and proven effective by scores of mothers and their babies from across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Based on her research, Pantley's guide provides you with effective strategies to overcoming naptime and nighttime problems. The No-Cry Sleep Solution offers clearly explained, step-by-step ideas that steer your little ones toward a good night's sleep--all with no crying.

Tips from The No-Cry Sleep Solution:

  • Uncover the stumbling blocks that prevent baby from sleeping through the night
  • Determine--and work with--baby's biological sleep rhythms
  • Create a customized, step-by-step plan to get baby to sleep through the night
  • Use the Persistent Gentle Removal System to teach baby to fall asleep without breast-feeding, bottlefeeding, or using a pacifier

 "It's magical" 2009-11-13
By Oana (Ohio US)
This book works great. Actually it works so well that the day we brought it in the house and started reading it (and making plans about how to adjust baby's routines), he started sleeping better. Seriously, it was magical. :) But beyond the coincidence I think the key message the book offers, and the one which has worked for us so well, is that daytime routines lead to established nap routines and better night sleep. Our 13 months old who had not slept through the night for 8 months straight started to sleep in longer and longer stretches. Now, unlness he is sick or teething, he sleeps from 7.30 pm to 7 am; it's true he may still wake up once or twice but has learned to self-soothe. Great resource for people who don't like the sound of the 'extinction method' of other sleep specialists.

 "Not for all personalities." 2009-11-09
By lrene (Bellingham, WA)
My son has been a very challenging little man and never a "good" sleeper. Starting at two weeks he would fuss and cry for hours every night after 5 pm and often we wouldn't get him to sleep until after 10pm; then he would wake every 1 1/2 to 2 hours all night long for comfort and nursing. While he was just a few weeks old we resigned ourselves to this pattern and before we knew it we had a 5-month-old with the same miserable sleep habits although we could get him to sleep by 7 pm every night he was still waking 6-10 times per night and often nursing each time.

I really wanted to try soothing my son to sleep without having to resort to cry it out methods so I was excited to read this book. I didn't find much information in this book that was helpful since most of the "methods" we were already trying from common sense and talking with other parents. I also found the tone of the book to be rather judgmental and in some instances condescending. It is clear that the author feels very strongly against crying methods but she doesn't allow much room for different personalities of babies. At several points in the book she states that if her methods aren't working then the parent isn't trying hard enough! I doubt that is the ONLY reason this book doesn't work for some people.

After trying these methods for a month I had succeeded in getting my son to wake every 30-45 minutes all night long! He was also tired and cranky and whiny all day long in response to his loss of sleep.

I finally put this book aside and read a few others (Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child and The 90-Minute Baby Sleep Program: Follow Your Child's Natural Sleep Rhythms for Better Nights and Naps) before deciding my course of action for my little guy. It involved some crying but not much (20 minutes was the worst) and the type of cry he gave was his angry cry...not sad or abandoned or hopeless. Thankfully I found a method that worked for me and my little high-needs baby that we could all live with and our family is finally returning to some balance. My older child is getting the attention he deserves, I'm getting some time with my husband each evening, and I'm getting enough sleep that I have my patience and sanity back. I hope you find your sleep solution as well...just bear in mind the temperament of your little one before choosing this book. I believe the "No Cry Sleep Solution" is best suited to easy temperaments and not to post-colic babies.

"Finally! A book that helps me AND my baby!" 2009-11-07

A wonderful resource for mothers who know that letting their child "cry it out" is simply not possible, nor should it be. Very useful suggestions for helping mother and baby sleep better.

"Worth its weight in gold..." 2009-11-03
By K. Ford (UT)
This book has the tips and instruction to get your child to sleep and stay asleep while be loving and nurturing. This is a very loving wonderful approach like Attachment Parenting but more convenient for nowaday living. I started seriously following this program and saw amazing results within a week. This book will help your child get out of certain sleep associations (rocking to sleep, feeding to sleep) so they can fall asleep and stay asleep on their own. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone that has or ever will have children. This book will show you how to get your children on schedules so they are happier, healthier and have good sleep habits that will last their lifetime. I would never let my child (or any child or adult for that matter) cry themselves to sleep so I thank Elizabeth Pantley for writing this book.

"This book saved my sanity :)" 2009-10-22

If you don't believe in letting your baby cry himself to sleep, get this book. This book offers a series of alternatives to help you create your own sleep plan. After a week of putting my own personalized plan, my baby is good sleeping on his own. He still wakes up several times a night but has no problem been back on his crib. I recommend this book to any parent who does not believe in letting your baby cry to sleep.
